What types of board to board connector are there?

Board to board connector is a kind of micro coupling plug and socket which can directly connect the power supply and signal between printed circuit boards through the pins of the connector. In order to prevent the reduction of electrical conductivity caused by oxidation of board to board connectors, copper alloy materials are generally used. Board-to-board connectors provide reliable pluggable connections between printed circuit boards (PCBs). Board-to-board connectors have particular advantages because they can easily replace and upgrade PCBs. Although there are many configurations to choose from, all board to board connectors work on the basic premise that male pins and sockets cooperate. There are many types of the board to board connectors. I will introduce them as follows.

  • Brief introduction to the board to board connectors

  • Classify board to board connectors according to appearance

  • Classify board to board connectors according to the different connection modes between circuit boards

Brief introduction to the board to board connectors

The use of board-to-board connectors simplifies the circuit board design process. Smaller PCBs require manufacturing equipment, which may not accommodate larger PCBs. Whether squeezing the device or product into a single PCB or multiple PCBs, you need to consider power consumption, undesired signal coupling, the availability of smaller components, and the overall cost of the finished device or product.

In addition, the use of board-to-board connectors simplifies the production and testing of electronic devices. In electronics manufacturing, simplified testing reflects huge cost savings. High-density PCBs have more traces and components per unit area. Depending on the investment in the complexity of the manufacturing plant, the equipment or product is preferably designed with several interconnected MDF instead of a single high-density board.

Classify board to board connectors according to appearance

1.Fine pitch board-to-board connectors: Fine pitch board-to-board connectors are ideal for electronic applications where space is extremely limited. In addition, the fine-pitch board to board connectors provide a low mating height, a narrow body, and are easy to mate and assemble.

2. SMT board-to-board connector: SMT board-to-board connectors allow PC boards with only surface mount components to be connected quickly and reliably. In addition, SMT board-to-board connectors do not require drilling, and can be reflow soldered together with other surface mount components.

3. Right angle board to board connector: Right-angle board-to-board connectors, as their name implies, allow right-angle connections, allowing you to connect vertical and horizontal PCBs without changing their orientation.

4. Spring board to board connector: The spring board-to-board connector contains springs, and even if the spacing between boards fluctuates, a safe connection can be achieved. Spring-loaded board-to-board connectors are ideal for applications such as portable devices that withstand continuous motion and vibration.

Classify board to board connectors according to the different connection modes between circuit boards

1.The row pin mother / pin, also known as row pin, is the cheapest and most common board-to-board connectors. It is mainly used in low-end, large-scale intelligent equipment, such as development board, debugging board, etc. This kind of board to board connector is cheap, convenient, strong over-current capacity, and convenient for wire bonding and testing. But it's big, hard to bend, big spacing, and it's hard to connect hundreds of pins.

2. Some high-end board to board connectors are more dense than needle rows, and are used in compact products. Conventional intelligent hardware products are basically in use and are widely used. This kind of board-to-board connectors is small in size, but it is expensive and cannot be plugged in and out frequently. The structure design needs to be fixed well.

3. The thickened board-to-board connector can be disassembled, merged, and inserted into the pin header. Commonly used in development boards, test boards and large and fixed equipment. This board-to-board connector is cheap and very easy to connect and measure. However, it is bulky and difficult to fix.

This article will definitely give you a better understanding of the types of board to board connectors.
