Technical FAQs

Q1: Why are there two versions of IDC connectors: with locking ramp and without locking ramp?

A: They are designed to match different mechanical reliability, cost and assembly scenarios:

With locking ramp: Add integrated locking ribs on housing to form physical snap-fit after mating. It greatly boosts retention force, resists vibration, cable pulling and thermal expansion displacement, avoiding accidental disconnection. It targets high-reliability working conditions.

Without locking ramp: Simplified housing structure without lock snap. Mating only relies on friction between terminal and header. Lower material cost, smaller outer dimension and easier full automation assembly, designed for static, low-stress indoor consumer devices.

Q2: What are the practical application differences between the two types?

IDC with locking ramp

Core advantage: Strong anti-vibration & anti-loosening performance, obvious audible "click" to confirm full mating

Typical applications: Industrial control equipment, motor drive modules, HVAC appliances, power control boxes, portable test instruments, equipment with frequent transport or mechanical shock.

Working environment: Equipment with continuous vibration, temperature cycling, external cable tension; products where loose connection will cause safety risks or equipment shutdown.

IDC without locking ramp

Core advantage: Compact size, lower unit cost, smooth insertion without extra lock resistance

Typical applications: Static indoor consumer electronics, LED lighting modules, small household appliances, internal fixed wiring of circuit boards, low-cost digital accessories.

Working environment: Static installation, no obvious vibration/shock, cables fixed by wire ties without pulling force, low-demand signal transmission.

Q3: How to select between locking ramp & non-locking ramp IDC connectors?

Follow these 4 judgment standards:

Check vibration & shock condition

If the device runs with continuous vibration, shock or frequent moving → Choose with locking ramp

If the product is fixed indoors without vibration → Choose without locking ramp

Evaluate risk of loose connection

Loose mating will cause power cut, signal loss or safety hazard → Locking ramp version required

Temporary internal wiring, negligible impact even if disconnected → Non-locking version acceptable

Cost & volume limit

Strict BOM cost control, compact housing space required → Without locking ramp

Long service life, high product quality standard, cost tolerance → With locking ramp

Assembly & production demand

Mass automated assembly line requiring low insertion resistance → Without locking ramp

Manual assembly, need clear click feedback to judge full insertion → With locking ramp

Q4: Does the locking ramp design affect compatibility with matching PCB headers?

A: No. M7060 series IDC with/without locking ramp share identical pitch, pin layout and internal terminal size, fully compatible with matching M3965 series PCB headers. Only the outer housing lock structure is different, no impact on electrical connection or mating dimensional matching.

Q5: Will the non-locking ramp IDC fall off easily during use?

A: It depends on the working condition. In fully static installation with cable fixed by strain relief or cable ties, the friction retention can guarantee stable connection. But under vibration, pulling force or temperature cycling, it will gradually loosen and cause intermittent signal interruption, so it is not recommended for high-reliability industrial scenarios.
