Why do IDC connectors sell so well?

IDC connectors are very popular among similar products, but many people have never heard of them. What is an insulation-piercing contact? What types does it have? What is the purpose of IDC connector?

What is an IDC connector?

An insulating displacement contact (IDC), also known as an insulating piercing contact (IPC), is an electrical connector that, by means of a connecting method, forces a selective sharp blade or a plurality of blades of insulated cables designed to be connected to the conductor (S) through the insulating layer, bypassing the need to strip the insulating layer of the conductor before connecting. When made correctly, the connector blade can be cold welded to the conductor, thus theoretically achieving a reliable airtight connection. Later, the development of IDC technology was influenced by the research on wire winding and compression connector technology pioneered by western electric company and bell telephone laboratories. Although originally designed to connect only solid (single strand) conductors, insulation-piercing contact eventually expanded to multi-strand conductors as well. Initially, IDC was only used in ultra-low voltage applications, such as telecommunications, network and signal connections between parts of electronic and computer systems. However, as illustrated here, they are still used in some household and industrial low-voltage (power) applications. The benefits used in these applications include a 50% increase in installation speed due to reduced stripping, twisting, and tightening processes.

Application technology of IDC connector

IDC connector technology is effective because metal-to-metal contact occurs during assembly. If the joint remains mechanically stable, additional diffusion welding may occur over time to improve the joint. However, stress relaxation and creep of terminals and conductors may also reduce reliability. Usually, IDC terminals will not only bite through the insulation layer, but also put a lot of pressure on the wire, thus forming a cold weld. The mechanical stability of the joint depends on a number of factors, including the spring characteristics of the terminal or connector and the load and strain applied to the wire. These two factors can be improved through the design of connectors. The external strain elimination of the cable greatly improves the long-term reliability of the connection because it prevents the movement of the terminal connection. The design of IDC terminal also plays an important role.

Wires also play a role: because of the compression load of the harness, due to mechanical interference, stress relaxation and creep, there is a tendency for the contact force to decrease when the harness relaxes in the slot. This may be affected by the number of strands in the wire and the laying or stranding, the top coating on the conductor, and the type of insulation. A better connection can be made if solid wires are used, but the wires themselves are usually not as strong. In general, most ribbon cables are multi-ply to provide optimal performance.

Type of IDC connector

1.Ribbon cable connector: ribbon cable connector solutions are one of the most widely used formats using insulation-piercing contact technology. Ribbon cable connectors can be used for a variety of different interfaces. Type D, GPIB and many other types, but IDC connectors are probably the most widely used with PCB's row pin connectors. These connectors typically have two rows of pins and can be used for a large number of connections. This makes it easy to connect a large number of wires on the board. These connectors are used extensively on computers and other computer-related boards.

2. Telecommunication connector: some forms of telephone and network plugs use insulation replacement technology. This provides a reliable connection during the installation of the telephone equipment. The RJ or registered jack series conforming to BS 6312 usually USES a separate wire in the insulation sheath. Strip the outer insulation layer and insert or press the wire into the contact using special end tools. In some cases, class 5 twisted-pair cables can also be assembled using this method, but Cat 5 cables can be purchased relatively cheaply when a fixed length is available.

In addition to being a reliable and practical technology, IDC connectors provide a very fast, reliable and easy way to assemble and connect connectors to cables. If you want to buy high quality IDC connectors at a reasonable price, Shenzhen Hongru Connector Co., Ltd  will provide you with the best products.
